Palm Beach Tan was started by Donald Zale, the former head of Zales Jewelers, in 1990. Since then it has grown into a huge franchise worth over $8 billion.

In 2018, Palm Beach Tan, know as the largest tanning service provider in the United States, acquired Darque Tan with tanning salons in a variety of Texas locales as well as in Boston and the Minneapolis/St. Paul area.
Forty-four locations were rebranded under the Palm Beach name, and Darque Tan members were transferred seamlessly to the Palm Beach Tan family.
